Halau Spring Cleaning

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

Calling all Keoua paddlers and friends! It is time for spring cleanup at the halau. We are hosting all of the one-man paddlers on the island at Uncle Louis’ one-man canoe race on February 26th. The community is invited to join us at the halau on March 7th to begin the 2011 paddling season. We want the halau to look fabulous.

Please join us on Saturday, February 19th, 9 A.M. for a Keoua work party.

Here are some of the jobs to be accomplished:

  1. Replant grass in canoe storage lot. Take 6-8″ stolens from the upper lot by hand pulling from planting areas, rock walls, and tree trunks. Plug into bare areas in Canoe Storage Area.
  2. Hand clear all vegetation from Halau platform with the weeds going into the compost pile mauka of the lot. Care should be given not to disturb the round stones.
  3. Moses in the Cradle plants should be removed from rock walls (carefully not disturbing rocks) and in the rest of the lot and composted in the concrete trough or removed to landfill.
  4. Other weeds removed from rock walls go into compost pile in back of lot.
  5. Air plant colony south of the Halau Platform, placed in plastic bags and removed to landfill.
  6. Grass to be pulled away from walls and sprinklers. Stolens may be replanted in bare spots or composted in pile.
  7. All coconut, milo, and other tree debris to go into compost pile.
  8. Recycle containers to upper lot recycle.
  9. Plastic, wood, metal rubbish into garbage cans.
  10. Clump grass should be pulled and left upside down in-situ.
  11. Loose rocks to be placed on ground in piles next to rock walls.
  12. Dracena to be pruned. Prunings into compost pile.
  13. Low hanging and dead branches of trees (Milo, Monkey Pod, Tamarind) removed and prunings into compost pile.
  14. Tall weeds and vines in makai end of lot (trailer storage area) go into the compost pile.

In Memory of John Kekua

Carmen shared this with us earlier this week:

Uncle John Kekua passed on September 1st. He has done so much for paddling & so much for all of us. Whether you knew him or not, if you paddled, Uncle John touched your life. The loss is immeasurable.

If you didn’t know John, take a look at the Hilo Tribune’s article: Kekua’s legacy as strong as koa.

Gretchen also had this to say:

Craig and Darralyn asked me to write to all Keoua members about this upcoming race and encourage participation.

As most of you know, this race was started by Uncle John Kekua, coach and kumu of Kamehameha Canoe Club, who passed away earlier this month. He was born in Hilo and started paddling in Hilo Bay in 1962 as a 14-year-old, and grew to be a man with boundless aloha and mana. His passion was advocating for youth, through paddling and all of wa’a culture, and over the years he had a positive impact on the lives of hundreds of young people.

He started the Kekua Foundation, a Maoli 501c(3), in order to connect young people to the richness of the culture of the koa canoe. It was not just about paddling for him, although he was a talented and competitive paddling coach. But he placed equal importance in immersing oneself in all aspects of canoe-related culture. The kids that he worked with, including a lot of at-risk youth, planted koa trees and learned the pule wa’a, and the older kids assisted with canoe building.

His approach to coaching kids was one of surrounding them with love and aloha. He was a firm believer in the concept that there are no “bad kids,” and put that belief to work every day as he transformed the lives of so many young folks by involving them in the discipline of paddling and embracing them with love.

Uncle John’s spirit of kokua spread beyond the youth – he was tireless in helping others. Building and restoring koa canoes was a passion for him, but he was just as passionate about making sure that canoe clubs from other islands, without access to koa forests, were able to get logs to build canoes. He put a lot of time into the back-breaking work of harvesting appropriate logs and making sure they got to the canoe clubs that needed them.

I could go on and on about him – he was one of my personal heroes, who totally personified what, to me, paddling is all about. Many in our club knew him very well – he and Kurtis especially had a wonderfully close relationship.

As Carmen said in her email that informed us about his passing, Uncle John had a very soft spot in his heart for Keoua Canoe Club. We would like to honor him by enthusiastic participation in the race this Saturday. It looks like we have almost enough for a mixed open iron crew. It would be great to have another crew as well.

If you’re interesting in paddling this weekend, call Gretchen, Kauila, or Craig. Craig is working at a location that is out of cell phone range, but you might be able to connect with him in the evenings. If you don’t have their phone numbers, leave a comment below.

Off Season Practice

From Darralyn:

Craig supports any Keoua member (with current waivers signed) and encourages them to paddle as much as they want too. All you need to do is call Craig or Shanti, have a experienced steersman, and check the times with one of them. They both work so you will have to leave a message.

The winter program is 7am Sat. morning, and 4:30 on Weds.

If anyone else wants to set up a specific workout time, or just go out that day, no problem, just call.

There’s also been some talk about what time on Saturday. 7am is too early for some folks (myself included; I only get up that early if I’m getting paid). So here’s a poll:

Help Needed at Liliuokalani Race

Aloha Keoua,

The Environment protection and Education Committee of our club, needs your help.

We have created great cooperation with Kai Opua to help minimize the impact of the upcoming Liliuokalani LD Race on OUR bay.
What is needed is as follows.

1. People to help inform and guide paddlers to the designated entry and exit points at the bay and keep others from walking in the inter tidal areas during the low tide Sat am. Need 6 to 10 youth/adults
This is about a 1.5 hour task

2. Kayak paddlers in the water to guide and inform canoes
3 to 5 kayakers. 1.5 hours, I will paddle one

3. Canoe Ramp Usher
One to two persons, 1.5 hours

4. Camera person to document whats working and what could be better. 1.5 hours

5. In water line.
one or two persons to help set the line
1 hour starting at 7.30 am

Lets do try to get our young people involved in the stewardship of our bay.

Mahalo nui,

Rick
