Keoua Honaunau Canoe Club is especially dedicated to serving its youngest members. In addition to offering a complete competitive paddling program to children ages 10-18, we provide ongoing Hawaiian Studies workshops during the year. At the end of the junior season, we host an annual cultural day designed to enhance the paddling experience and educate our kids about the rich history and unique cultural heritage of paddling, especially at Honaunau. This day of fun and cultural education includes:
- Hands-on preparation of an imu
- ‘Opihi expert’s talk and demonstration
- History of our koa canoes
- Importance of canoe culture to Hawaiians
- Using pono in our daily lives
- Tour of Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Park
- Tour of nearby salt flats and harvesting
- Double-hull rigging for night fishing
- Luau
- Tales by a Hawaiian storyteller around the campfire
- Chaperoned campout
